Borno state, known as the 'Home of Peace' to Nigerians, is located
in the Chad Basin in the north east of Nigeria and shares
boundaries with Niger, Chad and Cameroon. It is one of the oldest
in the Nigerian federation and its political centre, Maiduguri,
has served as capital for the old North Eastern State as well as
for the current entity.
Inside of Nigeria's frontiers, Borno borders
with Adamawa to the south, Yobe to be the west and Bauchi to the
south-west. With a pluralistic ethnic composition and a diverse
historical and cultural heritage which is still very much alive
today, Borno is a land of some 30 languages.
The State's 69,436 square kilometres
make it one of the largest in the federal republic. It has a
population of approximately 2.5 million people (1991) and with an
average population density of just 38 inhabitants per square
kilometre.
