Dankwambo: The Chartered
Accountant of the
Federation
By Labaran Saleh
He was amongst the young
but intelligent appointees
who raised the hopes of
youths that with hardwork,
commitment, and sincerity
of purpose, reaching the
peak of their ambition is
a matter of time.
Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo
must definitely have been
surprised, if not shocked
when the federal
government announced his
name as the new Accountant
General of the Federation
in April 2005, just a few
days after his 43rd
birthday. Because of his
relatively young age,
questions were raised
regarding his professional
background and experience.
It was speculated that the
young man was appointed
immediately after his
national youth service.
However, investigations
revealed that Dankwambo
had been a chartered
accountant since 1986. Not
only that, he became a
Fellow of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of
Nigeria (FCA) in 1996,
Member Nigeria Institute
of Management (ANIM) 1988,
Chartered Institute of
Taxation of Nigeria (ACIT)
1989, Member Nigerian
Economic Society (MNES)
1993. He is also a fellow
of Nigeria Institute of
Marketers (FNIM) and that
of Chartered Institute of
Bankers (FCIB).
His academic
accomplishments are also
noteworthy. Apart from
obtaining Bachelor of
Science Degree in
Accounting with a good
Upper Credit from Ahmadu
Bello University Zaria in
1985, he obtained MSc in
Economics from University
of Lagos and Post-Graduate
Diploma in Computers
Science from Delta State
University, Abraka 1998.
In his quest to equip
himself with the best of
education to face the
numerous challenges of the
modern dynamic world,
Dankwambo obtained other
certificates in reputable
institutions of learning
notable amongst which are
the West African Institute
of Financial and Economic
Management, Ghana;
University of Cape Town,
South Africa; Crown Agent
Management Development
Centre, United Kingdom and
Universities in United
States of America: Harvard
University, Cambridge
Boston Massachusets and
Duke University, Durham.
He started his working
career with Coopers and
Lybrand International
chartered Accountants (now
PriceWaterHouseCoopers)
from 1985 to 1988 where he
was Audit in-charge
accountant and Coordinator
of training works. He was
at the Central Bank of
Nigeria between 1988 to
1999 where he was
variously engaged in
examination of routine and
target operations of
licensed banks, review of
accounting systems and
records and use of audit
software to review banking
operations.
It was in 1999 at the age
of 37 that the government
of his state, Gombe,
invited him to serve as
the Accountant General of
the state before he was,
after six years in that
saddle, appointed the
Accountant General of the
Federation on April 19,
2005.
Dankwambo, who was
recently announced as a
nominee for the
prestigious national
honours award, has served
in various committees and
boards at the private and
public sectors of the
economy. Recently in
January 2007, President
Umaru Musa YarAdua
appointed him into
membership of the National
Stakeholders Working Group
of the Nigeria Extractive
Industries Transparency
Initiative (NEITI), a very
sensitive organ that
ensures that revenues from
the extractive sector aid
sustainable development.
As custodian of the fund
of Government, it is
Dankwambos duty to ensure
that all revenues are
captured in the treasury
and properly accounted for
by all collection agents.
Apart from his educational
and professional
accomplishments, Dankwambo
has a distinctive
personality, which greatly
helps in the performance
of his duties. He is
uniquely humble and has an
uncanny ability to work
under extreme pressure
without losing his
composure. A man of few
words, he would rather
provide facts and figures
than engage in political
discourse.
So far, Mr. Dankwambo,
probably the youngest
Accountant General of the
Federation, has
demonstrated that there is
pride in being focused,
knowledgeable and obedient
to constituted
authorities. Give it to
him; he is a young-man
that deserves the support
of all stakeholders in
moving the nation forward.
